Wisconsin Battery Company
Clean, Renewable Energy Storage
As the global demand for power grows, so does the need for power storage.
Wisconsin Battery Company (WinBat) was founded to help meet that need by developing safer, longer-lasting, higher-performance batteries that use more environmentally friendly materials.
WinBat is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sustainable Communities Corporation, a non-profit economic development organization. It was formed as a benefit corporation, and thus includes positive impact on employees, the community, society at large and the environment in addition to profit as its legally defined goals.

A More Eco-friendly Battery
Mindful of growing concerns about harmful constituents in battery materials, manufacturing and disposal, WinBat has set a goal of being an industry leader in incorporating sustainable materials and practices in its products and processes.
To that end, WinBat is working with research partners at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to develop hemp-carbon battery technology as well as rechargeable zinc-air and other batteries that use more abundant, environmentally friendly alternatives to lithium and other rare or environmentally problematic materials.

New Location, New Ideas
With headquarters in Madison, WinBat plans two manufacturing facilities in southeast Wisconsin, in the cities of Portage and Fennimore. April 23, 2024 marks the groundbreaking for the first new factory, located on an 18-acre parcel in Portage. It is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
The facility will reflect WinBat’s commitment to sustainability, powered by solar energy to the extent possible, and built to LEED specifications. Production lines will also be optimized to achieve a low carbon impact.
